This is the Season of Faith – No more gotta have it in your pocket or in your hand before you make a move . . . That’s not what God is calling us to right now.
“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable . He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might, He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the Lord, shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” Isaiah 40:28-31.
We’ve had to lean on that verse like never before. In the beginning of the year, our oldest son, decided after reading the literature of Teen Missions International (TMI), that he would like to go on a short-term missions trip. His father and I asked him to prayerfully consider if this is what God would have him do. He got back to us and said that he believed God had answered his prayer with a yes. So we said ok. Shortly after sending in the initial paperwork, my husband was let go from his job. No warning of any kind, just showed up to work and was told that day that it was his last day. Whoa!! Things came to a screeching halt. What’s this? Out of the blue – it hit us like a ton of bricks . . .
It took faith to continue to plan for Fela’s trip by sending in the initial security deposit knowing we had no income to pay for the upcoming trip. (I am a homeschooling mom and had previously retired from my job in December.) We knew we would have to trust God every step of the way to provide for Fela, since He had put the desire in Fela’s heart and we had given him our consent. We prayed on it and felt a peace in knowing God had a plan.
In March, the letters went out as planned to family, friends and our brothers and sisters in Christ, sharing with them what the Lord had laid on Fela’s heart and the overall cost to make a trip out of the country. The cost of the trip and related expenses was close to $4000.
Fela left June 12th for Orlando to attend Boot camp and then travel to Ecuador. Every dollar he needed was provided and then some extra for spending money. What we hadn’t realized at first, was that God had ALREADY went ahead of Fela and had provided for him by placing it on the hearts of people to give.
We didn’t have to beg, stress or worry about it. GOD DID THE WORK. We just had to take the first step by believing in Him and walking in it. Yes, we had to write letters and let people know what were Fela’s plans. We had to do something, but He had placed the desire in Fela’s heart and therefore He would complete the work to bring it to fruition. “Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead,” James 2:17.
A lot of times we’re doing things in our own strength and not in God’s. He is our Strength (Psalm 46:1). Go to Him. Pray and ask Him first what He would have you do and He will lead you. Most of us do it backward. We pray after we’ve done all we can, and then say “All I can do now is pray.”
Fela has been in Ecuador for a month, evangelizing and sharing Christ with the people in Latacunga and surrounding areas. He has learned valuable lessons in time management, team work, life skills, construction, the value of hard work and not taking things for granted. Most importantly, God has done a work in his heart. He has learned the value of having private time with God and how important that is in our decisions and day to day walk.
These words were taken from his journal posted on the TMI website July 22nd, 2010 “I had to work on my verse review early in the morning since I ran out of time the day before. I prayed to God to keep me sharp for my verse review. It turned out that I did exceptionally well and missed only one verse. The rest of the day was filled with work. We mixed and poured concrete for the sidewalks, which was very satisfying.”
Fela comes home Saturday, July 31st and I am looking forward to all that God has done in him. He has had to rely on God during this whole trip; something I know he’ll remember throughout his lifetime.
